These Italian sliders are bursting with flavor and are incredibly easy to make.

To take these sliders to the next level, we brush them with a flavorful garlic parmesan sauce before baking, creating a golden and crispy exterior that perfectly complements the soft interior. After baking, they’re topped with a vibrant and refreshing grinder salad. This unique combination of warm, savory, and fresh flavors makes these sliders irresistible. These Italian sliders aren’t just delicious – they’re also incredibly easy to assemble, making them the perfect option when you need to feed a crowd without spending hours in the kitchen.

While some might be planning their Super Bowl parties, our family values take us in a different direction on Sundays. It’s a day dedicated to family and our religious beliefs, meaning we don’t watch the game. However, that doesn’t stop us from enjoying some seriously good food! And since food is the heart of any good gathering, I wanted to share a recipe that would be a total touchdown with your friends and family! Think of these sliders as a delicious alternative while still getting that great food experience, check out our Super Bowl Food Recipe Roundup for more ideas!

This recipe is inspired by our popular ham and cheese sliders but with a fun, Italian twist. My love for chopped salads and the irresistible flavors of Italian delis led me to create this fresh and exciting version of baked sliders.

What You’ll Need to Make Italian Sliders

The key to these sliders is high-quality ingredients. Head to your local deli and grab some slices of your favorite Italian meats and provolone cheese. The remaining ingredients are likely already in your pantry or easily found in the produce section. Here’s a breakdown of everything you’ll need:

  • Hawaiian Slider Buns: The sweetness of Hawaiian rolls is a perfect match for the savory Italian fillings. You can use store-bought rolls, or for an extra-special touch, try making homemade Hawaiian sweet rolls.
  • Provolone Cheese: A classic Italian cheese that melts beautifully and adds a mild, creamy flavor.
    • NOTE: If you’re not a fan of provolone, mozzarella cheese is a great substitute.
  • Italian Meats: A trio of classic Italian deli meats – ham, pepperoni, and salami – creates a symphony of savory flavors.

Garlic Parmesan Glaze

This simple glaze adds a ton of flavor and a beautiful golden crust to the sliders.

  • Butter: The base for the glaze, adding richness and helping the sliders brown.
  • Parmesan Cheese: Freshly and finely grated parmesan adds a salty, nutty flavor.
  • Garlic Herb Seasoning: We love Johnny’s Garlic Spread, but any garlic herb seasoning will work great. Experiment with your favorite blends!

Toppings (Grinder Salad)

The grinder salad is what truly sets these sliders apart, adding a fresh, tangy, and crunchy element.

  • Mayonnaise: Adds creaminess to the dressing, binding the salad together.
  • Italian Dressing: Provides the signature tangy flavor of the grinder salad.
  • Sliced Black Olives: Adds a salty, briny flavor (optional, but highly recommended!).
  • Red Onion: Diced small, red onion adds a sharp, pungent bite.
  • Shredded Lettuce: Shredded romaine lettuce provides a crisp, refreshing base for the salad.
  • Tomatoes: Roma or vine-ripe tomatoes work great, adding sweetness and juiciness.
  • Pepperoncini Peppers: A signature ingredient in Italian sandwiches and salads, adding a touch of heat.
    • NOTE: If pepperoncinis are too spicy for you, use banana peppers or dill pickles for a milder flavor.

You can find the exact measurements for each ingredient in the recipe card at the end of this post.

How to Make Baked Italian Sliders: Step-by-Step

These sliders are incredibly easy to make! Baked slider sandwiches are one of my favorite ways to feed a crowd something warm, delicious, and satisfying. Here are the simple, step-by-step instructions:

  1. Prep: Preheat the oven to 350℉ (175°C). Cut the slider buns horizontally, separating the top and bottom halves. Place the bottom halves in a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Layer: Create the first layer by placing the provolone cheese on the bottom half of the rolls. Next, layer all three Italian meats – ham, pepperoni, and salami – evenly over the cheese. Add the top halves of the rolls back onto the sandwiches. Using a serrated bread knife, gently slice through the seams of the rolls to separate each sandwich, but keep them connected at the base.
    • PRO TIP: If you want extra flavor, you can spread a thin layer of pesto or Italian dressing on the bottom buns before adding the cheese.
  3. Bake: In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, grated parmesan cheese, and garlic herb seasoning. Brush this flavorful mixture evenly over the tops of the sliders. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and the tops are golden brown.
  4. Make the Chopped Salad: While the sliders are baking, prepare the grinder salad. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise and Italian dressing. Stir in the sliced black olives (if using) and minced red onion. In a large bowl, combine the shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, and sliced pepperoncini peppers. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss gently to coat.
  5. Assemble the Sandwiches: Once the sliders are done baking, carefully remove the tops and generously pile the chopped grinder salad onto the bottom halves. Replace the tops and serve immediately.

Totally Customizable!

Customizable Italian Sliders

The best part about these sliders is that they’re incredibly versatile! Feel free to adjust the ingredients to suit your own tastes. Experiment with different types of Italian meats and cheeses. You can also add other toppings like sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for a touch of heat. The possibilities are endless! Customize these sliders to create the sandwich of your dreams.

What is a Slider?

A slider is simply a small sandwich, typically around 2 inches in diameter, served on a small bun. The term often refers to mini hamburgers, similar to our cheeseburger sliders, but can also encompass any mini sandwich made on a slider roll. They’re the perfect handheld snack or appetizer, easy to eat, and perfect for sharing.

What to Serve with Italian Sliders

These Italian sub sliders aren’t just for the Super Bowl! They’re perfect for a quick weeknight dinner, a delicious appetizer for a party, or a crowd-pleasing dish for a potluck with friends. If you’re serving Italian sandwich sliders as a main course, here are some side dishes that complement them perfectly:

  • Hot, salty homemade French Fries or Smoky Fried Potatoes
  • Creamy Southern Macaroni and Cheese or refreshing Macaroni Pasta Salad
  • Light and flavorful Southern English Pea Salad or crunchy Broccoli Salad
  • Sweet and refreshing Cheesecake Fruit Salad or tropical Tropical Fruit Salad

Can Italian Sliders Be Made Ahead of Time?

You can definitely prep certain components of the sliders ahead of time to make assembly even easier. However, I don’t recommend fully assembling them too far in advance, as the moisture from the salad can make the buns soggy.

You can slice the buns and layer them with the cheese and meats, then place the tops back on and cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap. Store in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 hours. Do not add the garlic butter mixture on top of the buns until right before baking. The chopped grinder salad can be made an hour or so ahead of time, but any earlier than that and the lettuce may start to wilt and brown.

Storing and Reheating Italian Sliders

Ideally, avoid storing the assembled sliders if possible, as the moisture from the vegetables and dressing will make them quite soggy. If you do have leftovers, store the lettuce mixture separately and add it right before serving.

Sliders that have been stored with just the meat and cheese can be reheated in the oven or air fryer until warmed through. Add the grinder salad just before serving. Leftover sliders that are fully assembled can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about a day, but are best enjoyed cold.
