GF2: Crafting Gluten-Free Delights with Passion and Expertise

Our first stop brings us to Angie, the heart and soul behind GF2. From the moment you meet Angie, her genuine passion and dedication shine through, reflecting the exceptional quality of her gluten-free creations. As a discerning judge of gluten-free products, it’s rare to find items that truly stand out, but Angie’s offerings defy expectations. Often, the challenge with gluten-free alternatives lies in compromising on taste or texture. However, GF2 products are remarkably tender, moist, and utterly delicious, boasting a full-bodied flavor that will captivate even the most skeptical palate.

Angie’s journey began out of personal necessity and a deep love for baking. “I was diagnosed with celiac disease about 5 1/2 years ago. Like many, I was mis-diagnosed for years,” she shares. Having grown up immersed in baking and cooking with her mother, the initial struggle with gluten-free bread was disheartening. Yet, her resilient spirit propelled her forward. She diligently honed new skills, learning to bake with different grains and flour blends. The pivotal moment arrived four years ago when she relocated to Salt Lake City, recognizing a burgeoning market and the necessary resources to transform her passion into a business. With the Cottage Food Program becoming available in late 2008, GF2 officially launched in June 2009.

Initially facing minimal competition, GF2 quickly secured partnerships with two gluten-free specialty stores and a health food store. Despite a surge of nearly 20 new competitors, Angie continues to expand, driven by a growing base of loyal clients. Her philosophy is simple yet profound: “I wanted to focus on home-made, comfort type foods your grandmother would know and approve of.” Angie’s main goal is to create food that an entire family or group can genuinely enjoy, eliminating the need for polite but insincere compliments. Her products are designed to be “amazing, to travel well (we camp and road trip a lot), to freeze and thaw well, and to have a nice long shelf life.” Every recipe is a cherished family favorite, meticulously adapted to meet gluten-free standards without sacrificing taste or quality. Despite the bustling environment of a home-based business with three children, Angie finds immense support and encouragement from her family, who share in her passion. Her story resonates deeply with many entrepreneurial women and mothers, highlighting the universal balance of hardship and reward.

Angie’s commitment to creating truly exceptional gluten-free foods makes GF2 a standout in the Utah food scene. Her dedication ensures that eating gluten-free no longer means compromising on flavor or the comforting feeling of a homemade meal. Discover more of Angie’s incredible creations at GF2.

Gregory’s Wheat Shop: The Art of Wholesome Sprouted Wheat Bread

Loaves of bread from Gregory's Wheat Shop

Our next cherished local artisan is Gregory’s Wheat Shop, renowned for its delectable Jack Spratt’s Sprouted Wheat Bread. This establishment has been a cornerstone of the Utah community for an impressive duration, rooted in Bountiful, Utah. Their commitment to quality is evident in every loaf, and the community eagerly anticipates their expansion into local supermarkets. In fact, a simple call to your local grocer to request their bread can help accelerate this exciting development, allowing more people to enjoy their exceptional products.

What truly sets Gregory’s Wheat Shop apart is their unwavering dedication to natural ingredients. Their breads, which range from wholesome sprouted whole wheat to delightful cinnamon burst varieties, are completely free of preservatives. This commitment to purity ensures a superior product that aligns with a desire for healthier, more natural food choices. It’s a breath of fresh air to find a product where every single ingredient is recognizable and pronounceable, a rare and welcome attribute in today’s food market. The bread itself is a testament to artisanal craftsmanship: tender, rich in flavor, and boasting an incredibly high quality that distinguishes it from conventional alternatives. Even the youngest members of our family devour it with enthusiasm.

But the most remarkable aspect of Gregory’s Wheat Shop bread is its authentic taste. Each slice evokes the comforting aroma and exquisite flavor of freshly baked, homemade bread, as if it just emerged from your own oven. It embodies real, amazing, homemade goodness, elevating a simple staple to a culinary experience. Beyond the exceptional product, the people behind Gregory’s Wheat Shop are equally commendable, embodying the warmth and dedication characteristic of local businesses. Their passion for baking truly shines through, making every purchase a delightful experience.

Nature Baked: Revolutionizing Healthy Granola and Supporting Food Entrepreneurs

Continuing our journey, we encounter Mike from Nature Baked, a visionary whose granola is nothing short of extraordinary. For those who have grown tired of inferior, bland granolas, Nature Baked offers a revelation. Many have experienced the disappointment of store-bought granola falling short, often leading to wasted product. However, Nature Baked granola is a game-changer. It’s impossible to overstate its deliciousness; the caramel apple and strawberry-craisin flavors are particularly divine. Imagine topping your warm peach or apple crisp with this granola come fall – it’s an absolute must-try experience.

Mike’s journey and philosophy are incredibly insightful, offering a critical look at the food industry and a hopeful vision for its future. “I am a father, husband, CEO of Nature Baked Inc, and a chronic entrepreneur,” Mike introduces himself, also playfully admitting to being “a hopeless fanatic of collectible card games and board games with a Magic the Gathering collection that will rival any in the state.” His reasons for founding Nature Baked have evolved dramatically over time, a shift he credits for much of his success. What began as a means to generate supplementary income through farmer’s markets soon transformed into a profound mission.

As Mike delved deeper into the food industry, he became increasingly disillusioned by accepted practices and the widespread consumer ignorance, which he admits he also shared. “The part that blew me away was that the worst offenders were companies that portrayed themselves as ‘healthy choice’ companies,” he explains. He highlights the stark contrast: choosing Oreos is a known indulgence, but discovering that ostensibly “healthy,” “all-natural,” or “organic” granola bars contain more sugar and unhealthy fats than Oreos exposes a significant problem. This realization fueled his passion to create genuinely wholesome and transparent products.

Beyond his commitment to superior granola, Mike identified another critical gap in the industry: the lack of support for small food companies aspiring to enter larger retail markets. He observed a vast chasm between home-produced goods and large-scale production facilities, with minimal middle ground. Leveraging his connections with Gardner Development, a company known for significant urban projects, Mike is actively working to change this. They are planning to establish a facility that will not only accommodate Nature Baked’s needs but also provide space for a dozen or so co-op kitchens. These kitchens will be available for smaller companies to rent by the week, day, or even hour, serving as a crucial “springboard” for businesses striving to bridge the gap between home-based and commercial production.

What began as an effort to supplement income has blossomed into a transformative opportunity to effect meaningful change on multiple levels. Mike emphasizes, “yes I am fully behind and devoted to our granola, but Nature Baked is much, much more than just granola.” It represents a movement towards transparency, quality, and a supportive ecosystem for fellow food entrepreneurs, making Nature Baked a truly inspiring local venture.
