This cherished creamy artichoke dip holds a special place in our family, originating from my Mom’s dearest friend, Peggy Glem. It’s truly one of the most meaningful recipes we possess, a culinary heirloom steeped in love and memories. Its significance runs so deep that my mom herself will share more about its heartwarming origins further down the page.

I distinctly recall this dip being the undisputed star at every family gathering and party throughout my childhood. Without fail, someone would request the recipe, often multiple people, unable to resist its irresistible allure. Of all the dips I’ve ever sampled, including those from high-end restaurants, this homemade version consistently reigns supreme as my absolute favorite. Is it the healthiest option? Probably not, but the sheer joy and deliciousness it brings are well worth every indulgent bite. Sometimes, a little culinary delight is exactly what the soul craves, making every moment of enjoyment utterly guilt-free.

There’s a unique magic in how a beloved recipe can instantly transport you back in time, flooding your mind with vivid memories of cherished people, loved ones, or significant events. I passionately believe that recipes are far more than just instructions; they are stories, traditions, and an integral part of our family history, meant to be lovingly shared and passed down through generations of friends and family.

A Recipe Forged in Friendship: Remembering Peggy Glem

Peggy Glem, the wonderful woman who first brought this incredible artichoke dip into our lives, passed away several years ago. Her absence is deeply felt by all of us who considered her a second mother, an invaluable friend, and a cherished sister. Peggy’s home was a place where you always finished your crusts, learned to love sports, embraced camping adventures, and never turned down a good fruit cocktail. I vividly remember her calling my mom nearly every morning, exclaiming, “Mom, it’s Peggy!!!” Their laughter and chatter would fill our home, whether they were comfortably seated on a couch or relaxing in camping chairs during vacations.

Our families were inseparable, truly one big unit. We’d travel in separate cars on trips, yet communicate with notes pressed against our windows, a testament to our deep bond. Our houses were a constant hub of activity, with children running back and forth for playdates. I even recall waking up one morning to Peggy in our living room, calmly announcing that my mom was at the hospital, about to welcome my little brother into the world. These moments, big and small, wove an intricate tapestry of shared life and enduring friendship, making this easy appetizer even more special.

Having learned firsthand the profound importance of good friends, especially for women, and the enriching power of relationships – the lessons to be learned, the support to be given, and the love to be received from one another – I’ll now hand over to my mom to share her heartfelt reflections. May each of us be fortunate enough to have a “Peggy” in our lives. I know I am incredibly blessed to have found my own deep friendships as an adult, echoing the beautiful bond my mother shared.

Reflections on Peggy Glem by Carolyn Feik

“Have you ever met someone and instantly known that a profound friendship was destined to blossom? That’s precisely how my friendship with Peggy began. We were, in many ways, complete opposites. Peggy was outgoing, adventurous, and approached everything with an infectious enthusiasm. I, on the other hand, am naturally more reserved, quiet, and tend to be hesitant about life until I feel truly comfortable and confident. Many people struggled to understand why we were such inseparable friends, given our contrasting personalities. But we shared an undeniable connection.

We were passionate about the same core values, and we understood each other on a deeper level. This connection wasn’t limited to just us; it beautifully extended to our husbands and, most importantly, our children. We genuinely were one big, blended family – wonderfully different in our individualities, yet perfectly alike in all the things that truly matter. Our families shared common interests, from camping and fishing to playing games and our deeply held religious convictions. We vacationed together, entrusted our children to each other’s care, sat vigil by hospital beds during times of sickness, and shared in every significant event, both joyous and challenging, throughout our lives. When our children were young, Peggy and I would even go grocery shopping together, simply to carve out precious time to talk and connect. It sounds a little crazy, doesn’t it? I truly don’t believe friendships like ours come around very often; in fact, I consider it a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ blessing.

Peggy possessed an extraordinary gift with people. She had an innate ability to make everyone feel instantly welcome and profoundly important. Every person who knew her felt as though they were her best friend, a testament to her genuine interest in everyone she encountered. She sincerely wanted you to experience the absolute best life had to offer and would gently, yet firmly, encourage you until you achieved more than you ever thought possible. Peggy was my unwavering sounding board and my most trusted confidant. She understood exactly what I was trying to express even when I struggled to find the words to articulate my feelings. She was there for the good times, the hard times, the sad times, and the happy times, a constant source of support and love.

Every gathering with Peggy inevitably included abundant laughter, engaging conversation, and, of course, delicious food. I cherish so many of her recipes, and each one instantly transports me back to the precious moments we shared and the sweet memories of a truly ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ friend.”

We haven’t forgotten you, sweet friend. Your influence, kindness, and this incredible homemade artichoke dip remain in our thoughts always.

Essential Ingredients for the Best Artichoke Dip

When I first tasted this magical artichoke dip recipe, I was convinced it must be the result of some complex culinary wizardry. To my delightful surprise, the secret to its incredible flavor lies in the use of incredibly simple ingredients. You don’t need exotic items; just a few quality basics from your pantry. Here’s what you’ll need to create this irresistible dip:

  • Mayonnaise: For the ultimate creamy texture and rich flavor, we wholeheartedly recommend using Dukes brand mayo. Its distinctive tang elevates the entire dip.
  • Parmesan Cheese: This is where quality truly shines! Opt for a high-quality block of Parmesan and grate it yourself just before mixing. Pre-grated cheeses often contain anti-caking agents that can affect texture and flavor.
  • Cream Cheese: Ensure your cream cheese is softened to room temperature for a lump-free, silky-smooth blend. Full-fat or low-fat varieties work well, but for the best creamy consistency and flavor, we advise against using fat-free options.
  • Garlic: Fresh garlic is paramount here. Minced fresh garlic infuses the dip with a vibrant, pungent aroma that dried garlic simply cannot replicate.
  • Marinated Artichoke Hearts: These are the stars of the show! You have a choice: you can use both the artichokes and their flavorful marinade juice for a slightly thinner, more tangy dip, or drain the juice for an even thicker, creamier consistency. Both methods yield delicious results.
  • Salt: A fundamental seasoning that enhances all the other flavors, bringing balance and depth to the dip.
  • Dill: This often-underestimated herb is a game-changer for dips. Fresh dill provides a bright, herbaceous, and slightly anisy pop of flavor that perfectly complements the rich and savory base.

You’ll find the precise measurements for each of these essential ingredients detailed in the comprehensive recipe card located at the end of this post, ensuring your homemade artichoke dip turns out perfectly every time.

How to Make the Best Creamy Artichoke Dip

Crafting this incredible creamy artichoke dip is astonishingly straightforward, requiring minimal effort for maximum flavor. Follow these simple steps for a truly unforgettable appetizer:

  1. Prep: Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). This ensures your oven is perfectly ready to bake your dip to golden perfection.
  2. Blend: In the bowl of a food processor or a powerful blender, combine all of the ingredients. Process until the mixture is completely smooth and wonderfully creamy. Scrape down the sides as needed to ensure everything is fully incorporated.
  3. Bake: Pour the smooth, creamy dip mixture evenly into a 9×13-inch baking dish. Alternatively, you can use a large, shallow oven-safe bowl or dish. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 30 minutes, or until the dip is hot, bubbly, and has developed a beautiful golden-brown crust on top.
  4. Serve: For the ultimate experience, serve your hot artichoke dip immediately! It pairs wonderfully with crunchy bagel chips, toasted baguette slices, warm pita bread, or even fresh vegetable sticks for a lighter option. Enjoy this perfect party dip while it’s still warm and gloriously melty.

Alternative Cooking Methods: Versatile Artichoke Dip

How to Make in a Slow Cooker

This creamy artichoke dip is an excellent candidate for the slow cooker, making it ideal for potlucks or when you want to keep your oven free. Simply follow the initial blending instructions, combining all ingredients until smooth. Then, transfer the mixture to your slow cooker. Cook on low heat for 2-4 hours, stirring occasionally, until the dip is heated through and wonderfully bubbly. This method ensures your warm artichoke dip stays perfectly heated throughout your event.

How to Make in the Instant Pot

If you’re in a serious rush and need a delectable appetizer in a flash, the Instant Pot is your best friend. Combine all the ingredients as specified in the instructions, blending them thoroughly in a food processor. Pour the blended mixture directly into the Instant Pot. Cook on high pressure for just 5 minutes. Once cooking is complete, you can either perform a natural release or a quick release, depending on your time constraints. For that coveted golden, bubbly top, transfer the dip from the Instant Pot into a baking dish and place it under the broiler for a couple of minutes, watching carefully until it achieves the desired color.

Can You Make Artichoke Dip Ahead?

Absolutely! This creamy artichoke dip is a fantastic make-ahead appetizer, perfect for reducing stress on the day of your event. You can prepare the dip mixture up to 3 days in advance. Simply blend all the ingredients as instructed, then transfer the unbaked dip into an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to serve, pour the chilled mixture into your baking dish and bake as written in the instructions, allowing a few extra minutes if baking directly from cold, until it’s bubbly and golden.

How Do You Reheat Artichoke Dip?

For the best results and to maintain its delightful quality, we recommend reheating leftover artichoke dip in a conventional oven. Transfer any remaining dip into an oven-safe container, cover it loosely with foil to prevent drying, and place it in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for approximately 8-12 minutes. Heat until the dip is thoroughly warmed through and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Stir gently before serving to restore its creamy consistency.

Peggy would be absolutely thrilled to know that so many of you are enjoying her incredible creamy artichoke dip recipe! This is the best creamy artichoke dip we’ve ever had, at home or in a restaurant. Plus, it’s super easy and can be made in the oven or slow cooker, making it a perfect party dip.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Mayonnaise
  • 1 Cup Fresh Parmesan Cheese, grated from a block for best flavor
  • 8 Oz Cream Cheese, softened to room temperature (full-fat recommended)
  • 1 Clove Garlic, freshly minced
  • 1 Can Marinated Artichoke Hearts, 14 ounces *see note regarding draining
  • 1 Pinch Salt, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Dill, fresh or dried (use less dried)
US Customary – Metric

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Place all ingredients (Mayonnaise, Fresh Parmesan Cheese, Cream Cheese, Garlic, Marinated Artichoke Hearts, Salt, Dill) in a food processor or blender and blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  • Pour the blended dip into a 9×13-inch baking dish, or a similar large, shallow oven-safe bowl, and bake for 30 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.
  • Serve immediately while hot, with bagel pieces, warmed bread, baguette slices, pita chips, or fresh vegetables.
  • *See recipe notes below for detailed slow cooker and Instant Pot instructions, as well as storage tips.

Recipe Notes

Artichoke Draining: The recipe calls for the entire can of marinated artichokes and their juice. However, for a thicker and even creamier dip, I prefer to drain the artichokes before blending. It’s delicious either way, so choose based on your preference for texture.

Slow Cooker Method: To make this dip in the slow cooker, simply blend all ingredients as directed, then transfer the mixture to your slow cooker. Heat on low for 2-4 hours, stirring occasionally, until hot and bubbly.

Instant Pot Method: For a quick preparation, blend all ingredients and pour into your Instant Pot. Cook on high pressure for 5 minutes. You can do a natural or quick release. For a golden top, transfer to a baking dish and broil for a couple of minutes.

Storage: Leftover dip will keep well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.
