Our Basement Bedroom Reveal: Modern, Cozy, and Designed with Heart
We are absolutely thrilled to finally share our basement bedroom reveals! This project has been a journey of design discoveries, unexpected challenges, and ultimately, a profound realization about what truly matters in creating a home. Our vision for these spaces was clear: a clean, simple, and modern aesthetic, harmoniously infused with a touch of traditional warmth. We wanted to craft inviting sanctuaries that feel both contemporary and timeless, perfect for hosting guests or enjoying a quiet retreat.

The Unexpected Journey of Basement Design
It might sound strange, but renovating our basement taught us a great deal about life itself. The process was intensely busy, filled with countless decisions, from selecting paint swatches to choosing the perfect light fixtures. This past month, amidst the whirlwind, I found myself doing something entirely unforeseen: I paused all work on the basement. These basement bedroom reveals mean the world to us, and while the outcome isn’t exactly what we initially envisioned, it’s something even better—a testament to evolving plans and embracing genuine comfort over rigid perfection.
Confused? Let me explain.
Truth be told, interior design isn’t my passion. I’d much rather spend my time perfecting the ultimate pancake recipe – and I’ve got a winner with my Melt in Your Mouth Buttermilk Pancakes! But design? It brings stress, doesn’t come naturally to me, and the financial investment often feels daunting. Yet, a strong sense of inspiration guided us. Finishing our basement wasn’t merely a fleeting idea; it was a deeply felt calling we experienced last Christmas. So, we cast caution aside and dove into the project wholeheartedly, embracing the challenge.
A huge thank you goes to Becky Kimball, our wonderfully talented photographer, for capturing these beautiful images that bring our vision to life.

Finding Our Design Partner: Park City Blinds and Design
As the construction progressed and it came time to furnish and decorate, the stress truly began to mount. I seriously contemplated halting the entire process. Then, almost providentially, we discovered Park City Blinds and Design. If you’re looking for exquisite home inspiration, I highly recommend following them on Instagram—their feed is a treasure trove of beautiful ideas! We made the short trip to Park City and visited their stunning showroom, which immediately sparked our creativity and provided the much-needed inspiration to move forward.
Our visit wasn’t just about finding pretty window coverings; we learned an immense amount. To explain, I need to take you back in time to a story that deeply impacted our community and shaped our design choices for the basement.
Prioritizing Safety: The Importance of Cordless Blinds
Tragically, a sweet toddler named Elsie Mahe, who lived in our neighborhood, passed away in a devastating accident involving a blind cord. Her family, including her dad who coaches BYU football, endured an unimaginable loss. This heartbreaking event has profoundly influenced me, reinforcing the critical importance of child safety in home design. Throughout our basement renovation, I felt an overwhelming conviction that our window coverings absolutely had to be cordless. In fact, I’m now determined to replace all the corded blinds throughout our entire house, a project that will certainly take time but is undeniably worth it for peace of mind.
This commitment to safety became our starting point, inspiring our selection of window coverings and leading us to discover vital insights I had never known before. Modern cordless blinds offer not only enhanced safety but also a sleek, uncluttered aesthetic, seamlessly integrating into any decor style while eliminating potential hazards for children and pets. This tragic story underscores why selecting cordless options isn’t just a design preference, but a crucial safety measure for every family home.

Investing in Quality: The Value of Premium Window Coverings
I’ve always been a fan of a good bargain, but through this renovation, I quickly learned a crucial lesson: cutting corners on certain elements, like window coverings, can drastically impact a room’s overall appearance and longevity. I discovered that using the cheapest curtain rods, for instance, immediately makes a space look less polished and put together. A quick search online confirmed this—quality truly makes a visible difference!
Beyond aesthetics, we had previously experienced the frustration of buying and installing blinds ourselves, only to find they never quite fit right. So, when Park City Blinds and Design offered a comprehensive service—coming to our home to measure, custom-fit, and professionally install the blinds—I was completely on board! This all-inclusive approach eliminated all the guesswork and potential headaches, ensuring a perfect result.
Thankfully, their expertise extended far beyond just installation. The team guided us through an array of colors, textures, and brands, helping us select options that were the perfect fit for our style and budget. Their recommendations balanced aesthetic appeal with durability. We avoided anything exorbitantly expensive, but more importantly, steered clear of the cheapest materials that would look subpar and, crucially, wouldn’t stand the test of time. Investing in quality window coverings means not just a beautiful immediate result, but also long-term satisfaction and value, which is incredibly important to us.
Starting with the windows, everything else in the room began to fall into place. We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with Park City Blinds and Design for a multitude of reasons, especially for the stunning transformation they brought to our basement bedrooms.

These blinds are not only beautiful but incredibly functional. With a simple push and pull, they glide effortlessly with just one hand, offering a clean, user-friendly experience. For this particular basement bedroom, we opted for lined blinds because it faces a direction that receives a significant amount of morning light, ensuring guests can enjoy a peaceful, dark room for restful sleep.
For the other rooms, we maintained a simpler approach. While this room’s design began with the blinds, it was actually the side table that became the next crucial element. I had originally purchased it for another area, but fell in love with how perfectly it fit here. It not only provides a convenient surface for guests to place their belongings but also effectively breaks up the visual expanse of the long wall, adding both utility and aesthetic balance.

The Heart of the Room: Bedding and Comfort Essentials
Let’s be honest about the bed frame itself: it’s not our absolute favorite. While I’ll link to it, it proved quite challenging to assemble and isn’t as sturdy as we’d hoped. If the hassle of replacing it weren’t so significant, we likely would have invested in a different one by now. However, what truly makes the bed—and the room—shine is the bedding. It’s an investment that entirely transformed the comfort and appeal of the space.
Our Search for the Perfect Sheets: Sweet Sheets
The quest for ideal bed sheets led us to countless recommendations on social media. We tried several popular brands, only to be disappointed. Then, we discovered Sweet Sheets, and it was a complete game-changer! Seriously, these are the softest sheets we have ever encountered. Beyond their incredible softness, they’ve held up beautifully—no pilling or stretching, even after numerous washes. Absolute win! What’s more, they come in a delightful array of colors beyond the standard white, allowing you to choose exactly what suits your aesthetic and needs, making them a versatile and luxurious choice for any bedroom.

Oh, and these signs! I’m absolutely obsessed with them. We’re working diligently to get them loaded into our shop as soon as possible (yes, that’s right, we’re creating an online shop where you can easily purchase all our favorite home items anytime!). These “Stay Awhile” signs are a collaborative effort between SK Wood Designs on Etsy and Cade and myself. Our goal was to create pieces that were simple, clean, and modern, yet instantly conveyed a warm welcome, making our guests feel comfortable and completely at ease from the moment they step into the room.

Personalized Touches: The All-Wood Letter Board
This exquisite all-wood letter board is another recent favorite that truly elevates the guest experience. While standard letter boards are ubiquitous, we were absolutely thrilled to discover this unique version from Emerie Lane! It’s such a delightful and versatile piece, perfect for leaving personalized messages, inspiring quotes, or even practical information like our guest Wi-Fi password. It adds a charming, interactive element to the room, making guests feel thought of and cared for. You seriously need to snag one for your own guest space!

Notice that small grey dome on the side table? That’s a Dohm sound machine, an essential item in every bedroom in our house. It effectively drowns out those early morning birds and any other ambient noise, ensuring a deeper, more uninterrupted sleep. We thought our guests, sleeping in an unfamiliar place, would greatly appreciate the soothing white noise to help them rest more comfortably and wake up refreshed.

Our bedside lights were a complete triumph! We initially found them on a Facebook page, but their original source is West Elm. To create a custom, minimalist look, we cleverly ran the cords through a simple wood bracket from Ikea that cost only $5! This DIY touch not only saved us money but also added a unique, clean aesthetic to the bedroom lighting, perfectly aligning with our modern yet simple design philosophy.
Embracing Imperfection: The Art of Letting Go in Design
Now, we arrive at the part where I share that the final outcome isn’t exactly what I had initially expected for a “perfect” design reveal. If I were a professional interior designer, I would likely have spent more time meticulously styling those side tables, perhaps laying down a plush rug, adding more intricate artwork, and selecting a variety of fun, decorative pillows. But I didn’t do any of that. And you know what? I’m incredibly glad.
After a while, I noticed how much precious time I was dedicating to endlessly searching websites and physical stores for those elusive “perfect” pieces. The stress of not being able to find exactly what I envisioned was overwhelming, and more importantly, it was detracting from valuable time I should have been spending connecting with my family. So, in a swift and liberating decision, I ditched the pursuit of absolute perfection. And I don’t feel a single ounce of guilt about it.
The rooms, as they are now, are entirely liveable, comfortable, and frankly, perfect in their simplicity. I’ve realized that achieving happiness doesn’t require every last detail to be “finished” or picture-perfect; what truly brings joy and fulfillment is my family. Perhaps one day, if I happen to stumble upon some truly exceptional pieces that resonate with me, I’ll acquire them. But until then, I am content, finding beauty and peace in the present moment and the comfort of our beautifully functional, yet not overly styled, home. This journey taught me the profound art of letting go, prioritizing well-being, and finding joy in the “good enough.”
