This sensational twist on our beloved classic came courtesy of our dear friend, Mya, who suggested swapping out the traditional vanilla extract for coconut. The result? Pure culinary magic! We were absolutely speechless. It’s so incredibly delicious that, frankly, I’d consider bathing in it if the cleanup weren’t such a daunting thought (though I’m sure my skin would thank me!). For now, I’ll stick to devouring every last drop. And believe it or not, this syrup possesses an almost magical quality that transports you to a blissful paradise. Stay tuned to uncover its enchanting secret!

This versatile coconut buttermilk syrup offers more than one path to deliciousness. You can prepare it following our original buttermilk syrup method for a classic pourable consistency. Or, for an even richer experience, boil it a little longer to achieve a thicker, wonderful sauce. This deeper texture intensifies the incredible, subtle hint of coconut, so light you might miss it at first, but powerful enough to have everyone at your table clamoring for more.

What Exactly Is Buttermilk? Exploring the Essential Ingredient

Buttermilk is a fascinating dairy product with a rich history, and understanding it is key to appreciating the depth of flavor it brings to our syrup. Originally, traditional buttermilk was the tangy liquid byproduct left over after churning butter from cultured cream. This age-old process resulted in a naturally fermented, slightly sour, and incredibly flavorful liquid. While traditional buttermilk is still cherished in some culinary circles, the buttermilk you typically find in grocery stores today is known as cultured buttermilk. This modern version is made by adding a bacterial culture to low-fat milk, allowing it to ferment and thicken, developing its characteristic tang and creamy texture. You’ll usually find it conveniently located next to the milk, half & half, and cream in the dairy aisle.

Buttermilk’s unique acidity plays a crucial role in many recipes, not just for flavor but also for its tenderizing properties in baked goods. In our syrup, it contributes a distinct richness and a slight tang that perfectly balances the sweetness, creating a more complex and nuanced flavor profile than ordinary syrup could achieve. This subtle acidity also interacts with baking soda, giving the syrup its characteristic frothy texture and preventing crystallization, ensuring a smooth, luxurious consistency every time.

No Buttermilk? No Problem! Your Homemade Substitute

We absolutely adore buttermilk in our kitchen and almost always have it on hand, especially since it’s a staple for our melt-in-your-mouth buttermilk pancakes, a weekly indulgence. However, we know it’s not a regular on everyone’s grocery list. So, if a craving for fluffy buttermilk pancakes and this heavenly coconut buttermilk syrup strikes and your fridge is bare, don’t despair! Making your own buttermilk substitute at home is incredibly simple and effective. It’s a fantastic culinary hack that ensures you’re never more than five minutes away from enjoying the creamy tang of buttermilk.

The magic behind this substitute lies in the interaction between an acidic ingredient and milk. The acid curdles the milk slightly, mimicking the texture and acidity of real buttermilk, which is crucial for achieving that signature tenderness in baked goods and the balanced flavor in our syrup. Here’s how to whip up your own batch:

  1. Pour 1 Tablespoon of white vinegar or fresh lemon juice into a glass measuring cup. Either acid works perfectly, so use whichever you have on hand.
  2. Add enough milk (dairy milk works best, preferably 2% or whole milk for a richer result) to the measuring cup until it reaches the 1-cup mark. Give it a gentle stir.
  3. Let the mixture sit undisturbed for 5 minutes. During this time, you’ll notice the milk starting to curdle slightly and thicken, signifying that your homemade buttermilk substitute is ready to use!

This quick and easy method ensures that you can enjoy our Coconut Buttermilk Syrup, or any recipe calling for buttermilk, without an extra trip to the store. It’s a testament to how accessible delicious homemade cooking can be!

Preserving Your Sweet Creation: How Long Does Buttermilk Syrup Last?

Once you’ve experienced the delightful taste of homemade Coconut Buttermilk Syrup, you’ll want to make sure every precious drop is enjoyed. Proper storage is key to maximizing its freshness and flavor. If you find yourself with any of this delectable syrup leftover (which is a rare feat in our house!), it should be transferred to an airtight container and stored in the refrigerator. When properly sealed and chilled, your homemade coconut buttermilk syrup will maintain its quality and taste for an impressive 1 to 2 weeks.

When the craving strikes again, and you’re ready to enjoy its warmth, simply pour the desired amount into a microwave-safe container. Reheat it in the microwave for approximately 1 minute, or until it reaches your preferred warm, pourable consistency. Be sure to watch it carefully to prevent it from boiling over, as it can expand quickly when heated. Alternatively, you can gently reheat it in a small saucepan over low heat on the stovetop, stirring occasionally until warm.

For those who love to plan ahead or make larger batches, this amazing buttermilk syrup can be frozen! Store it in an airtight, freezer-safe container, leaving a little headspace for expansion, and it will keep beautifully for up to 3 months. When ready to use, simply thaw it in the refrigerator overnight, then reheat as directed. This convenient storage method ensures you’ll always have a batch of this liquid gold ready to elevate your breakfast or dessert.

The Question of Canning: Is It Possible to Can Buttermilk Syrup?

The idea of preserving this “liquid gold” through canning might seem like an excellent way to extend its shelf life even further, allowing you to enjoy homemade Coconut Buttermilk Syrup for months on end. However, when it comes to canning dairy products, caution is paramount. Unfortunately, due to the low acidity and high fat content of dairy, there is no safely tested method for canning buttermilk syrup or any other dairy-based syrup at home. Dairy products present a significant risk for bacterial growth, including Clostridium botulinum, which thrives in anaerobic (oxygen-free) environments like sealed jars and can cause severe foodborne illness.

While the thought of having a pantry stocked with jars of this delicious syrup is tempting, safety must always come first. Therefore, we strongly advise against attempting to can this, or any, dairy-containing syrup. But don’t let this deter you! As mentioned, freezing is a perfectly safe and effective alternative for long-term storage, allowing you to enjoy your homemade syrup for up to three months. So, instead of trying to can it, perhaps this is just a sign that you’ll have to whip up more pancakes, waffles, or French toast to use it all up fresh or from the freezer!

Beyond Breakfast: Creative Ways to Enjoy Coconut Buttermilk Syrup

While this delightful syrup is a breakfast superstar, its versatility extends far beyond pancakes and waffles. Its unique sweet, buttery, and tropical coconut profile makes it an incredible addition to a variety of dishes, transforming ordinary treats into extraordinary delights. Prepare to be inspired!

Cue your inner Def Leppard and get ready to sing, “Pour some syrup on me, ooooh, in the name of love!” It’s become a playful ritual in our home. Anytime I pour this glorious syrup over my kids’ pancakes, that iconic tune starts playing in my head, and I can’t help but belt out the adapted lyrics. The very first time I made it, a tiny droplet landed on my finger, and as I instinctively licked it, I was instantly transported to a serene beach. We’ve always been obsessed (as have all of you) with our buttermilk syrup recipe. I often joke it’s like liquid gold, but really, it’s the only pancake syrup I make anymore. Or at least it was. Things are changing over here and it’s going to rock your world. It’s sweet and buttery with a hint of coconut. Let the drooling commence!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup Butter, unsalted
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1 Cup Buttermilk
  • 1 Tablespoon Karo Syrup, Light
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 2 teaspoons Coconut Extract

Instructions

  1. In a large pot or saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, sugar, buttermilk, and Karo syrup.
  2. Heat the mixture, stirring occasionally, until everything is well combined and comes to a rolling boil.
  3. Quickly remove the pot from the heat and immediately stir in the baking soda and coconut extract. Return the pot to the heat, stirring constantly. The syrup will foam up and grow quite large, so a spacious pot is essential. If it threatens to boil over, lift the pot off the burner briefly while continuing to stir until the foam subsides.
  4. Allow the syrup to simmer over the heat for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it begins to turn an amber color and thickens to your desired consistency. For a thicker sauce, simmer for the longer duration.
  5. Serve your freshly made Coconut Buttermilk Syrup immediately and enjoy!

Recipe Notes

This delicious syrup will keep for up to 1-2 weeks in an airtight container in the refrigerator, or up to 3 months in the freezer.
