Embracing the Journey: From Hyperemesis to Morning Sickness Relief
What a journey it has been! If you’ve been following along on our Instagram account, you’ll know that at 18 weeks pregnant, I’m finally beginning to feel a profound shift. The relentless grip of Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) is slowly loosening, making way for what feels like “regular old morning sickness.” Believe me when I say, I never imagined I’d be so thrilled to experience morning sickness! While the roller coaster ride isn’t entirely over, with nights and mornings still presenting the toughest challenges, I’ve learned an incredible amount about resilience and how to navigate daily life even when nausea rages. For the most part, I’ve even managed to mask the intensity of my discomfort, allowing me to engage with the world more freely than before.
The path to recovery from Hyperemesis Gravidarum is incredibly varied and deeply personal. For many, relief might start anywhere between 12 to 20 weeks, though for some, HG can unfortunately persist even longer. Those of us who have faced its brutal reality understand what a monumental blessing it is to simply have “morning sickness” for the remainder of the pregnancy. It’s not an overnight transformation; rather, it’s a very gradual process, unfolding over weeks. For me, these last two to three weeks have been a true roller coaster of emotions and physical sensations. I’ll have a day or two that feels relatively manageable, only to be followed by what I’ve come to call a “crash day.” These crash days hit even with typical morning sickness when I’ve pushed myself too far, leaving me feeling extra sick, weak, and utterly drained.
Navigating Life with Lingering Weakness and Recovery

Speaking of weakness, it’s a constant reminder that I must continue to take things easy. And by “easy,” I don’t just mean avoiding overexertion; I mean that even the most basic tasks can be profoundly exhausting. A simple walk through the grocery store can be an immense challenge. Sometimes I make it through with minor discomfort, but other times, I end up sore and sick for the entire night afterward. So, if you happen to spot me navigating around town in one of those fun little motorized carts, please just give a friendly wave and understand that it’s a necessary tool for me right now. These mobility aids, while incredibly helpful, come with their own set of challenges. People aren’t always understanding or kind.
The Unseen Battles: Empathy and Mobility Aids in Public
It’s an odd experience to not “look sick” and yet desperately need assistance. Depending on the store, I’ve sometimes encountered a subtle (or not-so-subtle) attitude. Grocery stores generally seem more accommodating, but Costco, surprisingly, can be the complete opposite. I’ve actually had people get quite huffy about being “stuck” behind my slow-moving cart or having to navigate around me. To those who might feel impatient, I assure you, if someone is using a mobility aid, they would much rather be zipping through the store quickly like you. Instead of feeling bugged, I encourage patience, awareness of your surroundings (yes, I’ve been hit twice!), and perhaps even an offer of a helping hand.
One of the less talked about, yet profoundly impactful, effects of Hyperemesis Gravidarum is muscle atrophy. Simple actions, like stirring a batch of muffins, can make my arms ache with intense pain. Imagine trying to walk around a massive store like Costco when your muscles feel like that. It’s truly hard, and these aids are not a luxury but a necessity for maintaining some semblance of independence and accomplishing essential errands during recovery.
Celebrating New Life: A Glimpse into Our Baby’s Journey

Amidst all these physical challenges, there’s immense joy and excitement. Our little baby is thriving and looking absolutely wonderful! And yes, we have a secret – we know the gender! We are beyond excited, genuinely giddy, to be adding another precious member to our family. We’re patiently waiting for our 20-week appointment to confirm that all is perfectly well before we spill the beans to everyone. But trust me, containing this news has been an exercise in self-control!

On a personal health note, I’m truly doing so much better than just a few weeks ago. This week, I’ve reached 91 pounds (we thought it was 92, a minor bummer, but still progress!). This significant improvement means I can finally retire the kids’ clothes I’ve been wearing. Yes, you read that right. Our oldest daughter is nine, and I had purchased her a size 10 outfit on sale, intending for her to grow into it next year. When nothing else fit me during the depths of HG, I discovered that a children’s size 10 fit perfectly. It was comfortable, yet undeniably a little depressing at the time. Now, she finds it quite amusing that one day she’ll wear clothes her mom wore while pregnant.
Prioritizing Health: Rebuilding Strength and Nutrition During Pregnancy

A major focus for me now is working diligently to gain weight in a healthy, sustainable way. It always makes me a little sad to hear the misconception that pregnancy is a free pass to eat whatever one desires without thought for nutrition. Your body isn’t just yours anymore; it’s the home for this growing baby, who is entirely dependent on you for nourishment and development. I see a lack of nutrition and exercise, when it’s a conscious choice, as akin to living in a home filled with trash, constant television, and junk food – not the ideal environment for healthy growth. My utmost priority is to rebuild my strength and ensure my body is in the best possible place to nurture our little peanut.
To support this, I’m making a conscious effort to snack on healthy items between meals. Products like these Premier Protein bars have been a game-changer. They not only provide essential protein but also help me feel satiated, preventing me from reaching for unhealthy extras throughout the day. The peanut butter caramel and chocolate mint flavors are my personal favorites, and we conveniently stock up on them at Costco. Ultimately, my goal is to do the absolute best I can for myself and our baby, without succumbing to unnecessary stress. I believe this balanced approach fosters both physical and mental well-being throughout this incredible journey.
