We are absolutely delighted to welcome Sarah back to Oh Sweet Basil today! Her story holds a deeply personal resonance with us, as we too share the profound desire to expand our family, though our journey has faced its own unique challenges, preventing us from doing so at this moment. You might fondly recall Sarah from her incredible Ranch Chicken Pillows recipe – a true crowd-pleaser! One of the beautiful reasons we’ve chosen to collaborate on this blog is the incredible power of community, especially when it comes to adoption. Most adoption journeys are greatly helped by word-of-mouth connections. So, we earnestly ask you to consider pinning the last image in this post or sharing it across your social media channels. You never know whose eyes it might meet, and what a difference that could make. Without further ado, I’ll hand the virtual microphone over to Sarah to share her family’s heartfelt journey!
Our Journey to Adoption: A Story of Love, Resilience, and Hope
It’s with immense excitement and a touch of nervousness that we return to Oh Sweet Basil! Our last visit here was when Carrian graciously featured one of our absolute favorite recipes: the comforting and delicious Ranch Chicken Pillows. Today, however, we’re inviting you to delve a little deeper into our personal story, a narrative woven with threads of hope, challenge, and unwavering love. While we encourage you to click on our picture and explore our blog to learn even more about us, this post serves as a heartfelt introduction. We are Dave and Sarah, and we’ve been happily married for over six wonderful years. Our relationship began with a whirlwind romance – from our very first date to exchanging vows, a mere five months passed. But for us, it wasn’t a rush; it was an undeniable certainty. We had never felt anything so profoundly right, so incredibly real, and how could we possibly deny a connection as powerful as that?

Embracing Parenthood: The Miracle of Aliyah
Like many couples, after building our life together, our hearts longed to expand our family. For nearly a year and a half, we hoped and prayed to conceive, but with no success, we took those difficult, yet necessary, first steps toward seeking medical assistance. It’s a journey often fraught with anxiety and uncertainty, but we held onto hope. With the incredible support of medical professionals and countless prayers, our deepest wish was granted. We became pregnant and welcomed our beautiful, vibrant daughter, Aliyah, into the world. It’s a universal truth that all mothers, whether through birth or adoption, struggle to articulate the overwhelming emotions of holding their child for the very first time. For us, that moment was an exquisite symphony of pure peace, complete and utter happiness, and a profound, overdue sense of relief. In that precious instant, as we gazed at our newborn, everything felt absolutely perfect, a true gift from above.

Navigating Heartbreak: The Pain of Loss and Unanswered Prayers
As life often does, time moved forward, bringing with it both joy and unexpected challenges. After experiencing the immense blessing of Aliyah, our hearts were eager to welcome another child. However, our path to expanding our family once again proved to be incredibly difficult. Seeking medical guidance, we were met with the disheartening news that the previous assistance we received would not be effective this time around. What followed was a period of intense heartache. Over the course of two years, we experienced two pregnancies, both tragically ending in miscarriage. It’s nearly impossible to fully convey the depth of the emotions we grappled with after the second miscarriage: the overwhelming sense of loss, the gnawing frustration, the confusion, the crushing defeat, and the profound, physical pain. We had felt so strongly that we were meant to have more children, and each time, we poured all our hope into believing that this pregnancy would reach full term. But it wasn’t to be, leaving an emptiness that was hard to reconcile with our fervent desire for a larger family.

A New Horizon: Embracing the Path of Adoption
Healing from such profound losses takes time, and we allowed ourselves the space needed to emotionally recover and regain our footing. When we finally felt ready to consider our options again, we were advised that if we wished to pursue another pregnancy, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) would be our only viable path. This presented a significant crossroads for us. We knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that our family was meant to grow. Our options became clear: embark on the intensive and often challenging journey of IVF, or explore the beautiful, equally profound path of adoption. We dedicated ourselves to researching both avenues thoroughly, attending informational meetings, and engaging in deep conversations. After much reflection and prayer, a sense of quiet conviction settled upon us: adoption was unequivocally the right path for our family.
Six months have now passed since that pivotal decision, and the waiting, combined with the hopes and anxieties it brings, is a unique emotional landscape. There are days when it feels as if every person we encounter – from sisters and aunts to mothers and fellow grocery shoppers – is celebrating a pregnancy. In those moments, we can’t help but wonder why we’ve been asked to navigate the pain of infertility. Yet, despite the inherent difficulties, this journey has transformed us in ways we never imagined. We’ve grown more deeply as individuals and as a couple than we ever thought possible. Our appreciation for our family, friends, and neighbors has deepened immensely. We cherish every single “first” with Aliyah, recognizing the preciousness of each milestone. Our bond as a couple has become stronger, more resilient, forged in the crucible of shared challenges and dreams. And perhaps most significantly, we have gained a far greater, more compassionate perspective on life itself.

The Power of Community: Our Humble Plea for Support
And so, here we are, openly sharing our story and putting our hearts out there, all in the profound hope that you, our wonderful community, can help us find our future family member. This journey has brought us to a place of unparalleled humility, as we’ve had to set aside any lingering pride that suggested we could navigate everything on our own. We’ve learned that some paths require collective strength, and this is certainly one of them. We cannot do this alone. It is with earnest hearts that we hope YOU will take a moment to share our story. Every share, every pin, every conversation sparked, brings us one step closer to our dream.

Thank you for taking the time to read through our introduction and get to know a small piece of our lives and aspirations. We’ve asked for your invaluable help in sharing our story, and in return, we promise to share something equally sweet with you next week: the recipe for our absolutely favorite NUTELLA BARS! Consider it a delicious token of our gratitude for your support and kindness.

While Carrian might playfully protest our praise, we must extend our sincerest gratitude to her for the incredible amount of effort and support she has poured into helping my family and me “market” ourselves. Navigating the complexities of growing our family through adoption, especially by putting ourselves so openly out there, is not an easy endeavor. It requires vulnerability, courage, and a persistent hope that an expectant parent considering adoption might, against all odds, find our story and feel a connection. On our own, we could never hope to reach the vast number of people that Carrian and her family’s platform has allowed us to connect with. We are profoundly grateful to be a part of the Oh Sweet Basil community and sincerely hope that through our posts, you will continue to get to know us, feel inspired to share our story with others, and, of course, enjoy some of our most cherished family recipes.
