Imagine a warm, golden, flaky roll, perfectly baked and bursting with tender, spiced apples swimming in a luscious caramel sauce. This isn’t just any sweet roll; these are the legendary Apple Empty Tomb Rolls, a delightful twist on a beloved classic, featuring a magical secret that makes them truly extraordinary: a marshmallow that vanishes, leaving behind a gooey, buttery, and utterly irresistible caramel filling.

For those who have followed our culinary adventures, you might recall a recipe that nearly overwhelmed our website with its immense popularity. While several dishes have consistently drawn millions of views, the original Empty Tomb Rolls hold a special place. It’s this phenomenal success that inspired us to create this incredible apple-infused variation, a recipe we believe truly surpasses the original in flavor and appeal.
Our traditional Empty Tomb Rolls recipe is famously simple, requiring just roll dough, butter, cinnamon sugar, and marshmallows. It’s a testament to how uncomplicated ingredients can create something truly special. But as seasons change and palates crave new experiences, we found ourselves pondering innovative flavor combinations, especially as autumn approached.

A simple poll on Instagram about fall flavors—apple or pumpkin—yielded delightfully mixed results, making our decision even more challenging! Yet, amidst the playful debate, a brilliant idea emerged: Apple Empty Tomb Rolls. This creation shares a delightful kinship with our beloved Apple Pie Bombs, but with the added convenience of no frying required, making it a healthier and easier option for any home baker.
The magic of Empty Tomb Rolls, also affectionately known as Resurrection Rolls, lies in the delightful surprise awaiting inside. As they bake, the marshmallow melts away, creating a rich, caramel-like sauce that perfectly coats the filling. And what could possibly complement the sweet, crisp taste of apples better than a warm, buttery caramel? This synergy of flavors transforms a simple roll into an unforgettable dessert or breakfast treat, ideal for family gatherings or a cozy weekend indulgence.
The Enchanting Secret Behind Apple Empty Tomb Rolls
Curiosity piqued? The captivating secret to these extraordinary apple-filled rolls is surprisingly simple yet incredibly effective: marshmallows! When nestled inside the dough with the apples and baked, the humble marshmallow undergoes a magnificent transformation. It completely dissolves, leaving behind a wonderfully sticky, sweet, and caramel-infused sauce that envelops the tender apple pieces. This ingenious trick creates a hollow space within the roll, giving it its “empty tomb” moniker, while simultaneously enriching the flavor profile with an irresistible gooey center.
This vanishing act isn’t just for show; it’s the heart of what makes these rolls so special. The melted marshmallow mixes with the butter and apple juices, caramelizing into a decadent syrup that makes every bite a blissful experience. It’s a culinary surprise that brings joy and wonder, especially when shared with curious eaters. Let’s delve into the process of creating this delightful dessert.

Serving Suggestions for Apple Empty Tomb Rolls
Pause for a moment and envision these hot, saucy Apple Empty Tomb Rolls, fresh from the oven. They evoke the comforting essence of a classic apple pie, but in a convenient, hand-held form. Indeed, if you were to expand them with a bit more filling and perhaps two crescent rolls, they could easily pass for charming mini hand pies. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves; the core appeal remains their delightful resemblance to a warm apple pie. Therefore, the absolute best way to elevate this experience is to serve them alongside a generous, cold scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream. The contrast between the warm, spiced apple and caramel filling and the cool, melting ice cream is pure bliss, creating a symphony of textures and temperatures that will tantalize your taste buds. A dollop of fresh whipped cream or a sprinkle of toasted pecans could also add an extra layer of indulgence.
Crafting Your Apple Empty Tomb Rolls: A Simple Guide
Prepare to be amazed by how effortlessly these delectable rolls come together. This is truly one of the easiest desserts you’ll ever master, and the journey begins with preparing the star ingredient: the apples.
Preparing the Apple Filling
First, you’ll need to finely chop your chosen apples into small, uniform pieces. The secret to ensuring they become perfectly tender during the short baking time is a quick pre-cook. Microwave the chopped apples for about 1 to 1.5 minutes, just until they begin to soften. This crucial step prevents them from remaining crunchy in the finished roll, guaranteeing a melt-in-your-mouth experience.
Once microwaved, allow the apples to cool slightly. This is when you’ll perform **the most important step** of the entire recipe: carefully draining off *all* the liquid that has accumulated in the bowl. Any residual moisture will prevent your luscious caramel sauce from thickening properly and can make the crescent roll dough wet and challenging to seal. A perfectly drained apple mixture ensures a firm seal and a rich, concentrated caramel sauce.
Next, combine the drained, tender apples with a generous pour of melted butter and, of course, the magical mini marshmallows. While our original recipe uses large marshmallows, the mini variety works perfectly here, fitting seamlessly with the chopped apples without compromising the caramel effect. Finally, sprinkle in a healthy dose of cinnamon sugar and toss everything gently until the apples are evenly coated in this sweet, spiced mixture. This blend will create the incredible flavor and texture that defines these rolls.

Assembling Your Empty Tomb Rolls
Now, let’s turn our attention to the crescent roll dough, the canvas for our apple masterpiece. Separate each triangle of crescent roll dough. When working with the dough, avoid the common mistake of picking it up and stretching it by hand, which often leads to uneven thickness and torn spots in the middle. Instead, lay the dough flat on a non-stick surface, like a Silpat mat, and use your fingertips to gently and rapidly press it out. Keep your fingers close together and move them across the dough to create an evenly thinned, expanded surface. This technique ensures a consistent texture and prevents accidental tearing, making the sealing process much easier.
Place a spoonful of your fragrant apple and marshmallow filling into the center of each flattened crescent roll triangle. Carefully bring all the sides and corners of the dough up around the filling, pinching them firmly shut at the top. The goal is to completely enclose the filling, forming a neat, sealed bundle—the “tomb” that will soon reveal its delicious “empty” secret.
Once sealed, gently roll each filled dough ball in a shallow dish of melted butter, ensuring it’s fully coated for a rich, golden crust. Immediately after, transfer it to another dish containing cinnamon sugar, rolling it again to achieve a sparkling, sweet, and spiced exterior. This coating not only adds incredible flavor but also contributes to the beautiful caramelization during baking.
Finally, place each cinnamon-sugar-coated roll into a greased muffin tin. This provides individual compartments for baking and helps maintain their shape. Bake your Apple Empty Tomb Rolls in a preheated oven for a mere 10 to 12 minutes, or until they turn a beautiful golden brown and puff up. The quick baking time is part of what makes this dessert so convenient and delightful.
Allow the rolls to cool for just a minute or two before carefully removing them from the muffin tin. The caramel sauce inside will be hot and gooey, so exercise a little patience. Then, dig in and savor the warm, sweet, and utterly captivating flavors!

The Undeniable Importance of Draining the Apples
While every step in this recipe contributes to its delicious outcome, there is one step that truly stands out as **the most important**: meticulously draining all the liquid from your microwaved apples. After their brief stint in the microwave, apples will release a significant amount of juice. If this liquid is left in the bowl and mixed with the other filling ingredients, it will hinder the sauce from thickening properly inside the rolls, resulting in a watery, less flavorful caramel. Furthermore, the excess moisture can make the crescent dough soggy and incredibly difficult to pinch shut, leading to potential leaks and a less aesthetically pleasing (and harder to eat) roll.
So, after microwaving, allow the apples a moment to cool, then drain them thoroughly. You can use a fine-mesh sieve or simply tilt the bowl and hold the apples back with a spoon. This simple yet critical action ensures that your Apple Empty Tomb Rolls are perfect every time: flaky on the outside, with a rich, thick, and irresistible caramel apple filling on the inside. It’s a small effort that yields a huge difference in the final product!

Dough Options for Resurrection Rolls
While crescent roll dough is our preferred choice for its characteristic flakiness and ease of use, these delicious Apple Resurrection Rolls can actually be made with several different dough options, allowing for versatility and catering to various preferences:
- Homemade Dough: For the truly adventurous and those who enjoy baking from scratch, a homemade roll dough can provide an unparalleled freshness and texture. Our Rolls Recipe is a fantastic option that yields a wonderfully soft and buttery foundation for your apple filling.
- Packaged Biscuits: Brands like Grands or similar refrigerated biscuit dough work wonderfully as a quick and convenient alternative. Keep in mind that biscuit dough will result in a slightly different flavor and a denser, more bread-like texture compared to crescent rolls, but still equally delicious and satisfying.
- Frozen Roll Dough: Products like Rhodes Rolls or other brands of frozen bread dough are also excellent choices. The key when using frozen dough is to ensure you have ample time for it to fully defrost before you begin working with it. Additionally, after filling, allow the shaped rolls a short period to rise slightly, which will contribute to a lighter, fluffier end product.
Each dough type offers a unique experience, so feel free to experiment to discover your personal favorite for these delightful rolls!
Selecting the Best Crescent Rolls for Empty Tomb Rolls
When it comes to crescent roll dough, our experience has taught us that not all varieties are created equal for this specific recipe. For the most authentic and satisfying Apple Empty Tomb Rolls, the original crescent roll dough is truly the best choice. Its classic texture and buttery flavor provide the perfect canvas without overpowering the delicate apple and caramel filling.
We recommend avoiding the “butter flake” or extra buttery variations, as their heightened butter content can sometimes distract from the nuanced apple flavor, making the rolls feel overly rich. Other specialty crescent rolls, which may bake up with more prominent flakes, can also make it challenging to keep the apple filling securely enclosed during the delicate assembly process, leading to potential leaks.
Beyond the type, the most crucial factor for success is the **temperature of the dough**. Always keep your crescent roll dough cold until you are absolutely ready to use it. Cold dough is significantly easier to handle, less sticky, and maintains its shape better. Furthermore, when working with the dough, we highly recommend using a Silpat silicone mat or similar non-stick surface. Crescent roll dough can be quite a “beast” to manage, prone to sticking to everything, so a Silpat is truly an indispensable tool that will save you a lot of frustration and ensure smooth preparation.

Choosing the Best Apples for Dessert Rolls
The type of apple you select can significantly impact the flavor and texture of your Apple Empty Tomb Rolls. For a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness, and a firm texture that holds up beautifully to baking, our top recommendation is a Honeycrisp apple. A delightful combination of Honeycrisp and Granny Smith also works wonders, with the Granny Smith adding a pleasant zing that cuts through the sweetness of the caramel.
However, you have a wonderful array of apple varieties to choose from, each bringing its own unique characteristics to the rolls:
- Granny Smith: Known for its crisp texture and pronounced tartness, Granny Smith apples are excellent for baking as they maintain their shape and provide a bright contrast to sweet fillings.
- Honeycrisp: A truly versatile apple, Honeycrisp offers a fantastic balance of sweetness and a satisfyingly crisp bite, making it a favorite for both eating fresh and baking.
- Jonagold: This apple delivers a honey-sweet flavor with a hint of tartness, along with a firm texture that softens beautifully when baked.
- Braeburn: With a crisp texture and a complex sweet-tart flavor, Braeburns are a robust choice that holds up well under heat.
- Pink Lady: Offering a delightful balance of sweet and tart notes, Pink Lady apples are known for their firm flesh and vibrant flavor, which shines through in baked goods.
Feel free to experiment with these varieties, or even combine a few, to find your ideal flavor profile for these sensational apple rolls.
Understanding Resurrection Rolls: The Story and Significance
The original concept of Empty Tomb Rolls, often called Resurrection Rolls, carries a profound and heartwarming story, especially popular during Easter. The act of placing a marshmallow inside the dough, which then disappears during baking, beautifully symbolizes the empty tomb of Jesus after his resurrection. The gooey caramel left behind can represent the sweet promise of new life. This narrative makes the baking process a wonderful, interactive way to teach children about the meaning of Easter.
Our original post on Empty Tomb Rolls provides a full explanation of this charming tradition, offering a guided storytelling experience as you prepare them. However, if storytelling isn’t your primary goal, rest assured that these rolls are absolutely drool-worthy on their own merits. Even without the allegorical aspect, the combination of flaky dough, spiced apples, and luscious caramel is enough to make them an instant favorite for any occasion.
Essential Tools for Effortless Apple Empty Tomb Roll Preparation
While many recipes require only basic kitchen equipment, there are a few specific tools that can dramatically simplify the process of making Apple Empty Tomb Rolls, transforming it from a good experience into an incredibly smooth and enjoyable one. We rarely make such strong recommendations, but these items are truly worth the investment and will make your baking life significantly easier:
- Apple Peeler, Corer, and Slicer: This ingenious gadget is a game-changer. For around $20, it will peel, core, and slice your apples in mere seconds, saving you immense time and effort. It’s an invaluable tool for any recipe involving a significant amount of apple preparation, making tedious tasks quick and effortless.
- Silpat Mats: As mentioned earlier, crescent roll dough can be notoriously sticky. A Silpat silicone baking mat is an absolute must-have. It provides a perfectly non-stick surface, allowing you to easily press out and handle the delicate dough without it adhering to your countertop. This prevents frustration and helps maintain the integrity of your rolls.
- USA Muffin Tin: The type of muffin pan you use can actually make a difference in the baking of these rolls. We recommend a light-colored metal muffin pan, such as those from USA Pan. Darker metal pans tend to absorb more heat, which can cause the crescent rolls to brown incredibly fast, sometimes before the filling is perfectly done. A lighter pan ensures more even baking and a beautiful golden finish. Additionally, a quality muffin pan with slightly raised ridges on top makes cleaning any potential caramel overflow much easier.
Investing in these few specialized tools will not only enhance your experience making these rolls but also prove beneficial for countless other baking endeavors, proving their worth many times over.
