In our household, there’s a deeply cherished philosophy: the importance of a couple stepping away, just the two of them, free from daily responsibilities. While regular date nights are wonderful, there’s an unparalleled magic in a dedicated, adults-only getaway, even if it’s just an overnight stay. Our parents always emphasized that the greatest gift we can give our children is a strong, loving relationship between their mom and dad. This bond is best nurtured when we prioritize it, taking time to reconnect, rejuvenate, and rediscover each other without the delightful distractions of family life. So, as Mom and Dad embarked on our adventure, the grandparents happily took charge of the kiddos, ensuring everyone returned refreshed and re-energized.
This trip wasn’t just a getaway; it was a focused exploration of one of the world’s most dynamic cities, with a clear mission: to eat our way through it! The New York City Wine & Food Festival provided the ultimate culinary compass, guiding us through a whirlwind of flavors, experiences, and unforgettable moments.
Planning Your Ultimate Foodie Trip to New York City
Embarking on a trip to a bustling metropolis like New York City can sometimes feel overwhelming. However, we’ve discovered a strategy that transforms potential stress into pure excitement: basing our travels around a central focus. For this particular escape, the New York City Wine & Food Festival (NYCWFF) was the perfect anchor. It offered a predefined framework for our exploration, turning a general city visit into a targeted culinary adventure. Focusing on a specific theme, whether it’s food, art, history, or music, simplifies decision-making and allows for a deeper dive into what truly interests you.
When planning any New York City trip, consider a few key elements: transportation, accommodation, and the rhythm of the city. While the subway is an efficient way to navigate, embracing walking allows you to truly soak in the city’s atmosphere. Choose a neighborhood that aligns with your interests – whether it’s the artistic vibe of Greenwich Village, the upscale allure of the Upper East Side, or the bustling energy of Midtown. Most importantly, give yourself permission to let go of the rigid itinerary and allow for spontaneous discoveries, which are often the most memorable.

Unlock Romance: A Couple’s Trip to New York City
The allure of New York City is undeniable, making it an ideal destination for a couple’s retreat. It’s time to transform that lingering desire into a concrete plan, marking it on your calendar and committing to an adventure with your spouse, best friend, or loved one. Don’t let another year pass without experiencing one of America’s most iconic and romantic cities. From the dazzling lights of Times Square to the tranquil pathways of Central Park, NYC offers a backdrop for every kind of romantic endeavor.

On your romantic getaway, the key is to fully immerse yourselves in the experience. Forget about daily errands, mute social media notifications, and swap those high heels for comfortable walking shoes during the day (saving the glamour for your evening outings!). The true magic of New York is discovered on foot, wandering through diverse neighborhoods, stumbling upon hidden gems, and simply enjoying each other’s company without the usual distractions. This intentional disconnection from routine allows for a profound reconnection with your partner, fostering shared memories that will last a lifetime.

An Unforgettable Culinary Evening: Dinner with Emeril Lagasse, Timon Balloo, and Phillip Buccieri
Our NYCWFF journey began with an extraordinary dinner alongside the legendary Emeril Lagasse, joined by acclaimed chefs Timon Balloo and Phillip Buccieri. The evening was a true highlight, not only for the exquisite cuisine but also for the opportunity to witness Chef Lagasse’s impressive culinary artistry and engaging personality firsthand. The atmosphere was vibrant, filled with anticipation and the aromas of expertly crafted dishes, setting a high bar for the rest of the festival.
Every dish served was a testament to the chefs’ skill and creativity, but the dessert course truly stole the show. The banana cream pie was a revelation. We all know that not every banana cream pie lives up to its promise; it’s a dish often prone to being bland, too runny, or overcooked. However, Chef Lagasse absolutely nailed it. Each spoonful was a perfect symphony of rich, creamy custard, generously layered with perfectly fresh, substantial chunks of ripe banana. And the crust! Oh, the crust was a buttery, flaky masterpiece that provided the ideal counterpoint to the luscious filling. It was a truly decadent and unforgettable finale to an already exceptional meal.

Unleashing Creativity: Cake Decorating with Flour Shop’s Amirah Kassem
As someone who doesn’t consider herself a natural cake decorator, the opportunity to learn from an expert like Amirah Kassem of Flour Shop was an absolute dream come true. Amirah is remarkably young to have achieved such a high level of success and renown in her field. Often, with rapid success comes a hint of pride, but this was far from the case with Amirah. She exuded a genuine kindness, endless patience, and an infectious sense of fun, making the entire workshop an absolute delight.

It’s rare to encounter someone so successful who can make you feel like an old friend, effortlessly teaching you a new skill without making you feel inadequate or clumsy. Amirah’s approach was truly inspiring, fostering an environment where creativity flourished and mistakes were simply part of the learning process. I absolutely adored her and cherished every moment of the opportunity to craft such a vibrantly “crazy” cake! This experience, showcasing the festival’s diverse offerings beyond just dining, was a testament to the unique interactive elements NYCWFF brings to food lovers.

A Local’s Guide: Where to Eat in New York City
New York City is a culinary playground, boasting an overwhelming number of dining recommendations. However, our quest was not for the typical tourist traps but for the real deal: authentic, high-quality food cherished not only by visitors but, more importantly, by the discerning locals. Discovering these hidden gems and neighborhood favorites offers a truly immersive and delicious experience that goes beyond the guidebooks.
Eating your way through a city as diverse as New York demands strategic planning and a good dose of self-control – not to mention comfortable shoes and perhaps some workout clothes! With so many irresistible options at every turn, your feet will undoubtedly ache from all the exploration. We highly recommend getting in a good workout each morning to help burn off some of those delightful carbs you’ll be indulging in. Prepare for a gastronomic journey that promises both deliciousness and plenty of steps!

Alright, let’s break down these must-try establishments and their signature dishes!

Breakfast in New York City: Fueling Your Day
Start your day the New York way with these incredible breakfast spots, perfect for a quick bite or a leisurely morning meal:
- Doughnut Plant– It’s hard to believe, but we found ourselves captivated by both their cake and yeast doughnuts. The cake doughnuts boast a dense, rich texture with vibrant flavors, while the yeast doughnuts are incredibly light and airy. Trying both is an absolute must to fully appreciate their mastery.
- Brown’s Bagels– Everyone in NYC is on a perpetual quest for the perfect bagel, and we confidently declare that Brown’s Bagels offers some of the best, including their unique “Flagels” – flattened bagels that are ideal for sandwiches. Do yourself a favor and try their breakfast sandwich, especially with a generous addition of fresh avocado. It’s a game-changer!

- Bread’s Bakery– You might think you’re a savory breakfast person, but one bite of Bread’s Bakery’s offerings will change your mind. We insist you add this to your must-try list. Their Chocolate Babka is legendary – rich, swirled with dark chocolate, and perfectly moist. And for an even more exquisite morning treat, get the Apple Strudel, especially in the morning when it’s still warm from the oven. Seriously, it’s to die for, and the Babka is hands down the best we’ve ever had.
- Maison Pickle– While Maison Pickle is excellent for any meal, their French Toast for breakfast is a masterpiece. Thick, fluffy, and perfectly golden, it’s an indulgent start to any day. You can thank us later.

- Maman– Maman deserves multiple mentions because its delights are perfect for breakfast, a snack, or dessert. You absolutely must try the Nutella or Blackberry Cream Beignet. These delicate, pillowy pastries, generously filled with sweet goodness, are pure bliss. Oh, sweet mercy, indeed!

And don’t leave Maman without trying their famous chocolate chip cookie. Yes, it contains nuts, but you can easily pick them out if that’s not your preference. What truly sets it apart is its perfect balance of crispy edges and a soft, chewy center, brimming with rich chocolate. Many claim it’s even better than other popular cookie spots in the city. A pro tip: ask them to warm it up for an unparalleled experience.

Lunch in New York City: Midday Culinary Delights
With countless options, narrowing down lunch spots in New York City can be tough, but these favorites offer something truly special:
- Miznon– Located in a fantastic spot in Chelsea, Miznon specializes in pitas stuffed with all kinds of gloriousness. Think tender, slow-cooked meats, roasted vegetables, and vibrant sauces, all wrapped in a warm, fluffy pita. It’s a casual yet intensely flavorful experience.
- Sticky’s Finger Joint– For the ultimate comfort food craving, Sticky’s Finger Joint is your destination. Need we say more than “loaded cheesy bacon fries” to describe the irresistible appeal? Their creative chicken finger combos are also a must-try for a satisfying and fun lunch.
- Pickler & Co- This spot is a haven for delicious sandwiches and wraps, offering a range of fresh, high-quality ingredients that transform a simple lunch into a memorable meal. From classic deli-style to innovative combinations, there’s something for every palate.
- Maison Pickle– Maison Pickle truly shines as an all-day dining destination. While we loved their French toast for breakfast, lunch here is equally delightful. Their substantial sandwiches and comforting entrees make it a perfect midday stop. You simply can’t go wrong, no matter the time of day.

Dinner in New York City: Evening Feasts
When the sun sets, New York City transforms into a culinary wonderland, offering endless dinner possibilities:
- Julianna’s- In a city famous for its pizza, Julianna’s holds a special place. If you don’t make it here, at least venture into Little Italy, where authentic, delicious pizza abounds. We were strongly advised to try Julianna’s Margherita pizza – my all-time favorite – but with the addition of pepperoni. Hesitant at first, we opted for pepperoni on half. While the pepperoni was indeed fantastic, my heart remains loyal to the pure, classic perfection of their Margherita. The quality of their crust, sauce, and fresh mozzarella is truly unparalleled.
- Prosperity Dumpling- No trip to New York City is complete without a visit to Chinatown. Prosperity Dumpling offers those light, flavorful, and incredibly delicious dumplings that are a staple of the city’s diverse food scene. It’s a quick, affordable, and authentic experience that satisfies every time.

Snacks and Dessert in New York City: Sweet Endings & Midday Treats
Many of our recommended spots excel as both meal destinations and perfect places for a quick snack or a decadent dessert:
- Bread’s Bakery– Revisited for a reason! Bread’s offers an irresistible selection for any time of day, from delicate pastries and hearty breads to savory flatbreads with diverse toppings and fresh sandwiches. Their chocolate babka makes for an exquisite snack.
- Tal Bagels– Sometimes, a delicious bagel sandwich isn’t just for breakfast. For an afternoon pick-me-up, Tal Bagels hits the spot. Ask for double the cream cheese spread – you’ll thank us tomorrow for this indulgent delight.
- Boqueria– While their tapas are excellent, you might want to skip dinner altogether and head straight for their churros. These crispy, warm delights are perfectly paired with rich chocolate dipping sauce and, even better, often topped with creamy ice cream – an absolute sensation!
- Round K Cafe – Prepare for your mind to be blown by the Round Drop Cake. This unique and visually stunning dessert offers an intriguing blend of flavors and textures, making it a truly memorable experience. It’s a must-try for adventurous dessert lovers.
Anticipating Our Next New York City Adventure
While this trip was a delightful deep dive into New York’s culinary scene, we’ve also enjoyed other aspects of the city in the past, albeit many years ago. Our previous visit included a Broadway show, but we didn’t get to explore much else.
- For our next trip to New York City, we envision a more cultural exploration. We plan to delve into some of the city’s world-class museums, catch some vibrant concerts (hopefully an outdoor performance during a warmer season!), and certainly make time for another dazzling Broadway show in the evening. We’d love to hear your recommendations for museums, concert venues, or must-see Broadway productions!
Exploring New York City with Kids: A Future Family Adventure
Following our couple’s retreat, we’re already envisioning a future trip that includes our children! To be honest, the thought of navigating such a large, bustling city with our kiddos makes us both a little nervous, as we’re not entirely sure how to best engage them here. So please, we genuinely invite you to fill us in on your best tips and recommendations in the comments below about what to do with kids in NYC. From family-friendly museums to playgrounds and unique attractions, your insights would be invaluable!
Is a New York City Getaway Truly Worth It?
Was our New York City adventure a busy, deliciously fattening, and wonderfully indulgent trip?
Absolutely, unequivocally YES!
It was all of that and so much more – totally, completely, and utterly worth every moment. We cherished buzzing all over the city, hand-in-hand, soaking in the energy and savoring our time together. We only got distracted once while people-watching on the subway and completely missed our stop (a small price for entertainment!). And only once did we try a restaurant that wasn’t quite worth writing about. Beyond those minor blips, the entire experience was simply awesome! Every bite, every stroll, every shared laugh contributed to a tapestry of memories.
Life moves quickly, and someday you’ll be older, with life having shifted in countless ways. Why not seize the moment and go for it now? It’s a widely acknowledged truth that money spent on experiences, rather than material possessions, is the one thing people never regret. You might look back and question that extravagant pair of red cowboy boots, but you will never regret the trip to New York City where you savored a Nutella-filled beignet, marveled at a Broadway show, and simply reconnected with the one you love.
